Construction workforce demands in Central Florida continue to rise and career opportunities abound!
The Academy of Building & Design provides students with the opportunity to explore careers in General Building Trades, Electrical, HVAC/Refrigeration, and Welding. Students will follow a progression of courses aligned with a chosen trade. In addition to industry-specific course content, students will have the opportunity to take and earn industry certifications that will help them obtain post-secondary employment in the construction industry.
Students who enroll in the Program of Emphasis (POE) will be able to customize their educational pathway depending on their interests. Four programs are offered and students will have the opportunity to enroll in one or more depending on their skills and interests.

Welding Pathway
This path prepares students for entry into the welding industry. Students explore career opportunities and the requirements of a professional welder. The course content introduces beginning skills and progresses with advanced skills which are the key to success in the welding industry. Hands-on training includes the use of simulators and professional welding machines.
Building Trades & Construction Pathway
This path focuses on foundational skills that can be used in various construction trades. Emphasis is placed on using and identifying tools to complete hands-on projects involving carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, and masonry. OSHA curriculum will be utilized to teach safety standards.

Electrical Pathway
This path focuses on the fundamentals of electricity. Students will learn how to troubleshoot, repair, and replace various types of electrical systems from teachers who are trained experts in the field. Competencies include safety practices, direct-current electrical-circuit skills, appropriate communication and math skills, basic electricity and electric codes.
HVAC/Refrigeration Pathway
This path focuses on the fundamentals of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and utilizes the same equipment, materials, tools and techniques as industry professionals. This program is sponsored by Del-Air Heating and Air Conditioning.

Work-Based Learning Opportunities
Work-based learning is a key component of the Academy of Building & Design curriculum. Students have the opportunity to participate in job shadowing, internships, and/or apprenticeships; taking the knowledge learned in these programs to the next level through these experiences. Work-based learning is available to all students regardless of the program pathway chosen.
All Academy of Building & Design programs are part of the Academy of Construction Technologies (ACT) organization, a registered pre-apprenticeship program. The ACT program offers students the opportunity to begin a career in high school, integrating academics and paid work experience.
