The Lyman Academy of Engineering has adopted the nationally and internationally renowned Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum. PLTW's hands-on, activity, project-problem-based comprehensive curriculum is aligned with relevant national standards. PLTW's programs emphasize critical thinking, creativity, innovation and real-world problem solving. The program sets the highest standards for rigorous, focused and engaging study, developing students' innovative, collaborative, critical-thinking and problem solving skills. YEAR 1 - INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN

Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. Students in this class also take a dual enrollment course through SSC called Engineering Graphics and Drawing. In addition, students earn an industry certification in Autodesk Inventor.

YEAR 2 - STUDENT CHOICE

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

This course propels students' learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets. They learn basic orbital mechanics using industry-standard software. They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles.

COMPUTER SCIENCE HONORS

Computer Science

Computer Science Honors will expose students to a diverse set of computational thinking concepts, fundamentals, and tools, allowing them to gain understanding and build confidence. Computer Science Honors helps students create a strong foundation to advance to Computer Science Principles, Computer Science A, and beyond.

CIVIL ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE

Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3-D architectural design software. Students can also earn an industry certification in Autodesk Revit in this course.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Students investigate and design solutions in response to real-world challenges related to clean and abundant drinking water, food supply, and renewable energy. Applying their knowledge through hands-on activities and simulations, students research and design potential solutions to these true-to-life challenges. Students can also participate in competitions such as EngeryWhiz where they can design a solar oven and have a cook-off.

YEAR 3 - PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING

Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration and presentation. Students also earn three dual enrollment credits from SSC in this course.

YEAR 4 - ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in Engineering Design and Development as they identify an issue and then research, design and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing Engineering Design and Development ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. Students also earn four dual enrollment credits from Seminole State College in this course.

Engineering Pathways

MEGATRONICS/ROBOTICS

These courses engage students in the development, construction, and programming of various robotic assemblies. Students work hands-on in teams to design, build, analyze and document their progress. Teammates acquire an applied knowledge of motors, servos, sensors, coding, and mechanical structures to synthesize functional robotic systems. The Engineering method is applied in a cooperative, group project environment throughout all developmental stages, and these skills are applied to solve real-world problems in, and out of, the classroom. This program culminates in a year-long student guided capstone project where all acquired skills will be used in the design and construction of an advanced operational robot.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Computer ClassThis new optional pathway for the Academy of Engineering allows students to student computer science which is an integral part of engineering. Students can concurrently take their engineering courses along with 3-4 years of computer science related material. The courses for this pathway include Computer Science Honors, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A.
